Visit to Ramwadi

Purpose: To make a start in this area for waste segregation and vermicomposting
Proper Address: Ramvadi, Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Jogeshwari (E)
Contact person: Mr. Satish Shirke (CBO Head- Uday Seva Mandal)

Date: 22nd March 2007 - Day: Thursday - Time: 11pm -12pm

Present: From Unitedway & Mumbai Helpline: Mr. Rishi Aggarwaal, Mr. Shahil Thomas & Ms. Ayesha K. Lodhi, Mr. Ramanand Kowta (Garbage Concern) and Mr. Satish Shirke.

Meeting conducted at two spots in the entire areas. Importance of waste segregation was made clear to them by Mr. Shirke, Mr. Ramanand and Mr. Aggarwaal. Quite a positive response amongst the people and the sweepers. Mr. Shirke himself demonstrated them what is wet garbage and dry garbage, by segregating garbage with his own hands out of a garbage bin. Pamphlets in marathi conveying the same message were distributed. Youngsters showed keen interest, and the sweepers agreed to cooperate.

Mr. Shirke said he would make arrangement for dry waste collection from every house once in every two or three days provided they do not throw their garbage in the same bin they use at home. A price of 2 Rs Per Kg of dry waste was quoted by him.

For the wet garbage Mr. Ramanand and Mr. Agarwaal explained what is vermicomposting and how initially the wet garbage can be stored in drums and mixed with a nature friendly EM solution. Later on the content of the drum can be emptied into a vermicomposting pit.

One place could be identified, where there was no proper drainage, water stagnation and it was stinking badly. Thus seeing that this area is under utilized, stinks badly, and with so much filth, we thought that the pit can be made here, but not without BMC's permission. Mr. Shirke was of the view that dry collection of dry waste would be a success in his area, he was a little apprehensive about treatment of wet waste and its continuity.
